The Heat of a Chilli

Red Hot Chillies

Did you know that chillies have been used for thousands of years? They were first discovered in South America and were used by the native people for both food and medicine. The Spanish then brought them to Europe in the 15th century, where they quickly became popular. Today, chillies are used all over the world in many different cuisines and are popular in street food

Chillies – A Fruit

Chillies are a type of fruit that belongs to the nightshade family. They come in many different shapes and sizes, and they can be green, yellow, orange, red, or even purple. The heat of a chilli pepper is measured on the Scoville scale, which ranges from 0 (no heat) to over 2 million (extremely hot). The heat of a chilli pepper is caused by a chemical called capsaicin, which is found in the seeds and membranes of the pepper.

Chillies are a staple in many cuisines around the world. They are used in everything from soups and stews to curries and salsas. In Mexico, chillies are used to make spicy sauces and to add heat to dishes like tacos and enchiladas. In India, chillies are used in many different ways, from spicing up curries to adding heat to chutneys and pickles. In Thailand, chillies are used to make spicy salads and soups.

How Chillies Effect the Body

One of the most interesting things about chillies is the effect they have on the human body. When you eat a chilli pepper, your body reacts as if it is in pain. This is because the capsaicin in the pepper binds to the pain receptors in your mouth and throat. Your body then releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers. This is why some people enjoy eating spicy food – it can give them a natural high.

Chillies are also believed to have many health benefits. They are high in vitamin C and other antioxidants, which can help boost the immune system. They are also believed to help with digestion and to have anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies have even suggested that capsaicin may help with weight loss by boosting metabolism and reducing appetite.

There are many different types of chillies, each with its own unique flavour and heat level. Some of the most popular varieties include jalapeño, habanero, serrano, and cayenne. Jalapeño peppers are mild and are often used in Mexican cuisine
